Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior
GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Thursday, February 4, 2010) - The inaugural Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior today well and truly entered the business end of competition, with top seeded surfers posting perfect scores in barrelling beach breaks on Queensland’s South Stradbroke Island.
Perth Standlick (Bondi, NSW) was the day’s standout competitor with the stylish Sydneysider posting one of the day’s highest heat scores registering a combined two wave total of 14.35 points (out of a possible 20), including a near-perfect 9.85 gurgling barrel ride.
However, Standlick wasn’t the only competitor posting huge scores on the penultimate day of competition with Portuguese surfer Frederico Morais claiming a perfect 10-point ride and New South Wales star Davey Cathels (Narrabeen) not far behind with a 9.65 wave in their third round heats respectively.
Contest Director Scott Gillies said it was refreshing to see the world’s best junior surfers in some testing conditions.
“The conditions out there today were big, barrelling waves and I think the juniors were enjoying the challenge,” said Gillies.
“Competitors in this event aren’t far off the elite World Tour level, so to see them tested in some solid waves is good to see,” he said.
Competition is expected to conclude round-four today, leaving the quarter finals, semi-finals and final for the last day of the event’s waiting period tomorrow.
Conditions are expected to remain consistent for tomorrow’s conclusion with forecasts event suggesting a possible increase in swell.
Being run similar to an elite ASP World Championship Tour competition, the Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is based around a unique ‘island format,’ with the competition designed to give competitors optimal surfing conditions throughout the event’s duration.
The Couran Cove Island Resort Pro Junior is proudly supported by Couran Cove Island Resort, ASP Australasia, Red Bull, Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine, Sea FM and Surfing Queensland.
