After assessing the small conditions at Padang early Thursday morning, contest directors elected not to run the 2010 Rip Curl Cup Padang Padang Invitational Presented by Power Balance.

The event is now back ON HOLD until further notice. With nearly four weeks remaining in the waiting period, which ends Aug. 29, the 32 invited surfers are still confident we will get the “perfect storm” to deliver contest-worthy waves at Padang in the near future. Continue to check back for daily video updates to find out when “It's On.”

Good, but not good enough

The waves finally came up on Wednesday, but it still wasn't enough to give the green light for the 2010 Rip Curl Cup. As of Wednesday night, we were still on standby for a possible Thursday morning start to the contest.

The swell continued to build slowly throughout the day Wednesday and by sunset there were inconsistent 4-foot sets breaking beautifully over the Padang reef. The 32 invited surfers, the judges and contest directors will all be back at Padang beach at dawn Thursday morning to make another call whether to hold the event.

Although the waves today weren't big enough to hold the contest, several of this year's contestants paddled out for some smaller Padang shacks, including Tom Lowe and Morehu Roberts. Lowey tried out a brand new 6'3” pintail he had shaped here in Bali. After getting spat out of a few nuggets he reckons he's found his board for contest day. Morehu, meanwhile, pulled the trifecta and surfed out at Uluwatu in the early morning, Bingin in the late morning and Padang in the afternoon. It was his first time surfing Padang and the Kiwi said he can't wait to surf it with only three other guys in his heat.

Other contestants took advantage of the new swell at other spots around Bali. Dede Suryana, Indonesia's only full-time WQS challenger, caught some fun waves at outside Temples just below the Rip Curl team house. Ozzie Wright was skating all over the reeling walls of Racetrack during the morning session. Flynn Novak was busy at Impossibles trying to land some more Flynnstone Flips on camera for the Kustom air Strike contest.

Will the waves spike in size overnight? Will Thursday dawn on smoking 6-foot Padang pits? Will the Ultimate Tuberiding Contest be ON tomorrow? You'll have to check in Thursday morning to find out...
