22 June 2011, Katiet – Sipora Island, Mentawai: An incredible day of surfing kicked off the inaugural Mentawai Surf Competition 2011 today on the island of Siporo at Lances Right (also known as HT’s), with countless barrel rides in arguably the best contest waves seen in recent history. Rounds 1, 2, and 4 heats of Round 3 were completed in 4-6 foot barreling Mentawai perfection.
Bali’s Dewa Made Ardika got the highest wave score of the day, 9 points out of a possible 10 for very deep barrel in one of the largest set waves of the day. West Java’s Dede Suryana scored an 8.5 out of 10 in his Round 2 heat win, and close behind was fellow West Java surfer Asep Pahruroji scoring an 8.45.
Another Bali surfer, De Randi Dinar, nabbed the highest heat score of the day in Heat 2 of Round 3, ending with a combined two wave score of 15.25 to place first over 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Open Division Champion Putra Hermawan, who finished just less than a point behind.
29 pro surfers from the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour arrived at Katiet Beach on the 20th of June, joining 29 local surfers from Padang and the Mentawai Islands to compete in the inaugural Mentawai Surf Competition, a 6-star Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned event offering at total prize purse of some Rp 60 million, along with valuable Coca-Cola ISC Championship points and the chance to surf one of the best waves in the world in a competition setting.
“Today was by far the best day of surfing I have ever seen and filmed on the ISC tour to date. There were so many good waves and the guys were going 110 % for every barrel, I got so much insane footage. This place is as close to perfect as you can get I reckon, so happy to we got the chance to come here,” said Coca-Cola ISC Tour Video Director Sean Gilhooly.
The event was officially opened on Monday evening the 20th of June in an ceremony where speeches by government officials were followed by local dancing and a welcome speech by Mrs. Desti who is the head of the Mentawai Department of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, the main sponsor of the Mentawai Surf Competition 2011.
Originally scheduled to be held in North Sipora, the venue for the competition was changed to South Sipora due to the ease of access to the surf break of Lance’s Right just in front of a beautiful white sand beach ringed with coconut palms. Plentiful lodging at the many homestays, the SurfAid office with internet and satellite communication, all make for the ideal set of for the event that will possibly conclude tomorrow depending upon weather and wave conditions.
Special thanks goes out to Surf Aid for the use of their internet, as well as to all the locals of Katiet for the use of their beach and waves for this great event.
The competitors have been told to stand by at the beach tomorrow morning at 8:00am for the start of Heat 5 of Round3, as the top seeded surfers will no doubt provide another spectacular day of competitive action in the best waves on the planet.
The Mentawai Surf Competition 2011 is sponsored by the Mentawai government with media support by Lines Magazine, SurfTime Magazine, SurfersVillage.com, Magic Wave Surf Community Newspaper, RVM, Baliwaves.com, and Alam TV Bali, and sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships.
