29 July 2011, Nusa Lembongan-Indonesia: Day One of the Billabong Pro Junior Indonesia at the famous Shipwrecks righthand surf break on the island of Nusa Lembongan saw Round One of the Under 16 Division and four rounds of the Pro Junior (Under 21) Division completed in rippable 2-3 foot waves.
More than 30 of Indonesia’s top Under 21 junior surfers from as far away as West Java, Sumbawa, Lombok, and Bali converged on the idyllic island of Nusa Lembongan, Bali’s next-door neighbor, to compete in Billabong’s first ever Indonesian-only pro junior surf competition, which will continue tomorrow and with the finals planned for Sunday morning.
The day began with the Under 16 groms paddling out in the small but glassy conditions, using the Ware-Ware surf boat as a base camp that also housed the judging panel. Highlights of Round One of the Under 16 ‘s included young Rio winning the first heat of the day over Indonesia’s reigning junior champion Jeren Kiring, and Andre Julian posting the highest single wave score of the morning, 7 points out of a possible 10, as well as the highest heat score of 10.90 (out of possible 10).
Lembongan locals Ediana Putra and Angga Mardiana put on a good show, winning their heats at their home break, and Usman from Lombok putting up an impressive backside display.
The first four heats of the Pro Junior Division were run as the tide was running out, with reigning Coca-Cola ISC Open and Pro Junior champ and Lembongan local Putra Hermawan advancing along with Angga Mardiana in the first heat, and Putu Anggara putting up the highest wave score of the four heats, a 7.0, in front of his hometown fans in heat 4. With the tide almost bottoming out, the contest was called for the day as the organizers elected not to send the next heat out in the shallow and possibly dangerous conditions.
The contest will resume tomorrow morning at approximately 8 am with the Heat 5 of Round 1 of the Pro Junior Division, which will see Oney Anwar, Darmaputra Tonjo, Jeren Kiring, and Komang Dolar in what promises to be an exciting matchup to start the second day of competition.
