Oakley Pro Junior 2011
August 1- 14, 2011
Canggu Beach, Bali - Indonesia
It was another exciting day at the Oakley Pro Junior at Canggu Beach, with challenging wave conditions at both the Sand Bar and the Rivermouth breaks creating both opportunities and upsets during the day’s competition. Early low tide conditions had 2-3 foot waves breaking all over the place, and then as the tide was rising 4 foot plus lumpy bombs would close out the beach.
But wave selection and a bit of luck all played their parts, and smashing his way into a final’s berth was Simarai, who seemed almost more surprised than anyone that he made it that far. “I haven’t been in a final for a long time,” he said after his semifinal win over Gazali Hamzah. “And since this is my last contest as a Pro Junior I’m really happy to have made it this far. Hopefully I can win tomorrow!”
Simarai will be meeting an in form Putra Hermawan in tomorrow’s final, who again posted the day’s highest single wave score of 8.25 out of 10 points, as well as the highest heat score of the day, 15.75 out of a possible 20 points. Hermawan was also the standout in the afternoon’s Oakley Lines Air Show, a 35-minute free-for-all that had 8 of Indonesia’s best Pro Juniors going all out to land the biggest and best air to take the Rp 500,000 prize. The winner will be announced on the podium tomorrow.
There were some surprising eliminations today, with Canggu’s local wunderkind Jeren Kiring fell to Simarai’s powerful surfing attack at the Sandbar, and then last week’s Pro Junior contest runner up Gazali Hamzah was narrowly defeated by Simarai in the semifinals at the Rivermouth.
In the much anticipated duel between Darmaputra Tonjo and his twin brother Made Darmayasa, Tonjo had his brother combo’d for most of the heat to take a decisive heat win, ending with a combined wave score of 15.50 points to Darmayasa’s 12.65. Darmayasa was left needing an 8.95 wave score when the horn blew.
Tonjo however, soon went down in his semifinal match against Putra Hermawan, ending his run to the final. It remains to be seen who will emerge as the Pro Junior rankings leader, but for now Tonjo is still in the Number One spot, but it will be between Hermawan and Simarai to decide who gets the wild card entry into the Oakley World Pro Junior being held in October at Keramas.
The call for tomorrow is for a 9:00 am standby, as the swell is expected to be increasing requiring a higher tide for the best surfing conditions.
In addition to the Pro Junior final tomorrow, surf club teams from Medewi, Legian, Seminyak and Lembongan will be competing for the 2 top spots in the semi-final battle of the first-in-Indonesia Oakley Surf Tag Series. The final of the Oakley Indonesia Surf Tag Series will be held during Oakley World Pro Junior in October.
