Wednesday October 14 2009 Keramas River-Mouth Bail; Immediate Release: Remaining surfers competing in the Oakley Pro Junior Challenge Final for 2009 made their way to Keramas River-mouth in the dark early this morning to run three superb heats on prime high tide conditions.
With a solid 6 feet plus swell and ideal winds today’s heats saw surfers committing to massive on-face manoeuvres with semi-final and one final positions being decided.
French surfer Marc Lacomare was the morning’s dominant surfer, his precise and powerful surfing being rewarded by winning through as the first surfer into the final.
Lacomare and Brazilian standout Alejo Muniz won their respective quarter –finals in early dawn heats and then went on to face each other in the one semi final that was completed today.
While Muniz had been the highest scoring standout all event, Lacomare was the surfer to continue to increase his performance levels and surfed brilliantly in this semi final, finding the better waves and unleashing his refined and power-driven backhand attack to win through to the final.
“I’m so happy to again make the final of this fantastic event and I really hope I can go one better and win this final tomorrow” said Lacomare.
“My surfing has been getting better each heat and I feel really good surfing such a perfect wave like this -- Alejo (Muniz) has been amazing all event but I think he had a shocker in that semi final and I was able to get the better waves and win through.”
The early quarter –finals saw South Africa’s Brendon Gibbens defeated by Lacomare and Charly Martin (France) defeated by Muniz with both surfers placing equal 5th overall.
Incredibly just two heats remain, one semi-final between Hawaiian Kai Barger and Australian Sam Wrench with the winner to take on Lacomare in the final and tomorrow morning, with perfect tides and swell expected to deliver awesome conditions, is the likely climax to this event.
Over seven days to date heats have been surfed per day in the following way, 3, 3, 5, 4, 3, 0, 3 with a final day of 2 heats almost certain – a schedule we are sure highlights quality and unlikely to ever be matched in professional surfing!
