16 June 2011, Cimaja-West Java: Today’s Round 4 man-on-man action on Day 4 of the Best West Java Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver was suspended at the conclusion of Heat 4 due to the strong onshore winds that arrived quickly at the mid point of the 30 minute heat. The competitors were told to come back to the beach at 4 pm in hopes that the winds would subside and the competition could resume, but continued strong winds left Contest Director Quiksilver’s Simon MacGregor no choice but to cancel the contest for the day.
“We’ve got plenty of time left for the remainder of the contest, two full days, and looking at the swell and wind forecast gives us optimism that we’ll have great conditions on tap for the continuation of the contest tomorrow morning,” said MacGregor. “We’ve told the competitors to be standing by at 5:30 am for a 6:00 start, and we expect to complete Round 4 and the quarterfinals tomorrow.”
Heat 1 of Round 4 saw current Coca-Cola ISC rankings leader Pepen Hendrik paddling out in near perfect 3-4 foot glassy Cimaja waves to take on the Philippines Luke Landrigan in the first man-on-man heat of the competition. Hendrik jumped into the lead by posting one of the highest waves scores of the morning, a 7.0 out of a possible 10, and soon added a 6.5 wave score that netted him a total score of 13.25 and the heat win.
The most hotly contested battle of the morning came in Heat 2 with goofyfooter Mega Semadhi able to overcome an initially large point deficit and take down Agus Frimanto. Frimanto had jumped into the lead with a pair of good scores, a 4.5 and a 6.5, with Semadhi only able to post scores below 4 points on his first 4 waves. But midway through the heat the tables turned with Semadhi blasting some huge under the lip turns to first post a 7 and then a 6 take the lead and eventually the heat win.
Garut Widiarta had little trouble dispatching Gogo Sujaya in Heat 3, going to work like a surgeon dissecting the smaller inside waves with his lightning fast backside attack to get some points on the board, while Sujaya waited with priority on the outside. Garut’s strategy paid off, as most of the best-shaped waves were in the middle section, while Sujaya couldn’t seem to find a good scoring opportunity and time ran out on him.
Though the final scores of Heat 4 were only one point apart, 10.85 to 9.85, it seemed dominated by heat winner Dedi Santosa, who kept busy prowling the lineup and catching waves, while Made “Bol” Adi Putra sat out the back for over half of the 30 minute heat not catching a single wave with priority. Adi Putra had posted two average scores and made the decision to wait outside with his priority, counting on a bigger set wave for a big scoring opportunity but the ocean never delivered that opportunity, instead bringing the strong winds that eventually called a halt to the day’s competition.
The remainder of Round 4’s man-on-man action will continue tomorrow morning with a 5:30 am call for a 6:00 am start, so be sure to come to Cimaja Beach at the crack of dawn to check out the Best West Java Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver, or you can also follow the on-line and view heat draws, heat and waves scores, video’s and photos and more at www.isctour.com/events/cimaja11 and on Facebook look up Indonesian Surfing Championship, Quiksilver Indonesia, and Roxy Indonesia.

Round 4 Tertunda Akibat Kondisi Angin Kencang Kurang Mendukung – West Java Surfing Competition 2011 presented by Quiksilver
