22 May 2009, Cimaja-West Java: The expected rise in the swell this morning got Round 4 started at daybreak with 2008 ISC Pro Champion and Cimaja local Dede Suryana paddling out to take on Made Awan from Serangan Island in Bali. In a pitched battle that saw Suryana in the lead at the start of the heat, he was then overtaken by Awan at the midway point but during the last minute of the heat slotted himself into an 8 point barrel that got him the win and a spot in the quarterfinal tomorrow.
Macking 5-6 foot waves were pounding the cobblestone beach on the early high tide in pulsing four to five wave sets, throwing up spray high into the air. The long period swell meant the ocean would go virtually flat for several minutes and look literally lifeless, but then rear up and send a barrage of sizable set waves that at times closed out for a hundred meters or more.
Throughout the morning there were several upsets during the man-on-man heats, several of the lower ranked surfers downing their opponents and earning a spot in the quarterfinals.
Number 22 ranked Marlon Gerber defeated Number 14 ranked Rahtu Suargita, in spite of breaking his board halfway through the heat, and Number 21 ranked Dylan Amar downed Number 7 ranked Wayan “Gobleg” Suyadnya, while Number 1 ranked Dede Suryana, Number 2 ranked Lee Wilson, and Number 3 ranked Garut Widiarta all managed to dispatch their opponents and will battle on in the quarterfinals.
The swell is expected to increase slightly tomorrow and to provide the same if not better surfing conditions that were on tap today. The event will be completed tomorrow, with the quarters through the final of the Pro Division, as well as the finals of the Masters and Women’s Divisions.
Tomorrow’s Lineup:
Quarterfinal 1: Dede Suryana vs Devis Ratif
Quarterfinal 2: Made Lapur vs Dedy Santoso
Quarterfinal 3: Garut Widiarta vs Marlon Gerber
Quarterfinal 4: Dylan Amar vs Lee Wilson
