Oakley Pro Junior 2011
August 1- 14, 2011
Canggu Beach, Bali - Indonesia

In an unexpected climax to three days of exciting surfing at the Oakley Pro Junior surfing competition yesterday at Canggu Beach in Bali, Ida Bagus Simarai trumped 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Pro Junior and Open Champion Putra Hermawan to take his first-ever contest win and come home with Rp 9 million (just over $1,000 USD) and a wildcard spot in the Oakley World Pro Junior competition that will be held at Keramas Beach in October of this year.

“I’m so happy to have won today,” said Simarai.  “I’m 20 years old and will be 21 soon, so it was my last chance as a pro junior.  I’ve never won a comp before, so I don’t really know what to say other than I’m happy to finally have done it!”  Later from the podium he thanked his sponsors, the judges, the ISC, and his family for all their support.

Simarai will join top ranked pro junior Darmaputra Tonjo as wildcards at the ASP sanctioned Oakley World Pro Junior at Keramas, which will run from the 3-14 of October.  They will be competing against the world’s best pro junior surfers for the richest pro junior prize purse in history of $75,000 USD, a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Hermawan was obviously disappointed by his loss to goofyfooter Simarai, citing wave selection as the key to winning the final.  “Simarai just seemed to be in the right position for the bigger set waves, and maintained priority for most of the heat,” he explained.  “I was behind from the start so I had to surf the inside to try to get some points.  The side-shore win wasn’t as strong as it has been so I didn’t make a couple of airs, and then time just ran out on me.  I only needed like a 6-point wave too.  It was especially disappointing because I really wanted that wildcard spot.”

The final score was Simarai with 12.10 points, having posted first a 6 and then a 6.1, whereas Hermawan finished with 10.55 points, his best a 6.85, needing to better his next best wave of 3.7 with a 5.35 to win

Hermawan received a check for Rp 5 million and was also the recipient of the Oakley-Lines Air Show for which he was awarded another Rp 500,000.  Equal third place finishers Gazali Hamzah and Darmaputra Tonjo each received checks for Rp 3 million, their share of the total Rp 20 million prize purse.

The three day Oakley Pro Junior event saw 32 of Indonesia’s best pro junior (Under 21 years of age) competing at the high performance wave Mecca of Canggu for the ultimate prize of a Wildcard spot in the Oakley World Pro Junior, prize money and Coca-Cola ISC Pro Junior Division Championship points.

Just before the Pro Junior finalists took to the water yesterday, the surf club teams from Medewi, Legian, Seminyak and Lembongan paddled out and competed fiercely for the two spots in the final of the first-in-Indonesia Oakley Surf Tag Series, which will be held during Oakley World Pro Junior at Keramas this October.

It was a closely contested battle in challenging conditions, with all the teams shouting and cheering on their teammates during the 1-hour heat, but when time was called it was Lembongan taking the top spot with Seminyak the runner up.

And to ensure that that Canggu Beach was left in better condition that it was found, the goal being to leave only foot prints in the sand, the R.O.L.E Foundation crew together with the Yayasan GUS crew held a beach cleanup in order to ensure that the beach area was left free of trash….Clean and Green!

Oakley’s Sports & Alternate Marketing Manager Gino Andrias was extremely pleased with the event, saying “We had a great final today, right down to the wire with last year’s winner Putra Hermawan staging his comeback just as time was running out, against Simarai who as the underdog seemed to be the crowd favorite today.  It was very exciting and everybody at the beach was riveted by the action until the end. These kids are really improving by leaps and bounds each year, so we’re very gratified by what we’ve seen throughout this entire comp.”

Clean and Green!
