21 May 2009, Cimaja-West Java:  The ISC’s top ranked pro surfers put on a dominating display of high level performance on Day Two of the Billabong Pro Java today to the delight of spectators lining the cobblestone beach of the seaside town of Cimaja in West Java.

Though the expected increase in swell size didn’t materialize, there were excellent shaped waves lining up and reeling down the point, providing ample opportunity for the advancing Round 3 contestants to show off their best maneuvers…and they did.

Round 3 started out with Cimaja local and top seeded 2008 ISC pro surfing champion Dede Suryana ripping the guts out of his few waves and cruising to an easy heat win.  Subsequent heat winners and top seeds Garut Widiarta, Raditya Rondi, and Lee Wilson all posted scores in the 7’s and 8’s, taking the sometimes testing conditions in stride and wowing the fans with their big and committed moves. Though some of the local Cimaja boys like Ujang Jetli and Apek nabbed some excellent waves, they couldn't put together a consistent attack with which to overcome the more experienced competitors.

After Round 3 had been completed, the ISC Masters Division contestants had their chance to get in on the action.  The four heat winners were divided equally between locals and the visitors, with the Balinese duo of Made Artha and Made Sachang winning their heats, then local brothers Edin and Jerry winning their heats.  They just happen to be the older brothers of Dede Suryana, by the way, so the surfing talent was obviously passed down through the bloodline.

Competition is scheduled to begin again tomorrow at daybreak, with the expectation that the swell will increase and provide the most epic conditions in which Round 4 can be completed.  Round 4 will be held in a man-on-man format as opposed to the four man heats, resulting in the maximization of the excitement level that comes with the sport of surfing.

This event is the second stop on the 2009 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour, boasting a total prize purse of Rp 40 million between the Men’s Pro, Masters, and Women’s Divisions. The 6-star Billabong Pro Java competition is being held over a four-day period between May 20-23, with almost 90 competitors from Bali, Nusa Lembongan, Java and Sumatra making the journey to scenic Cimaja to surf for money, glory, and ISC championship points.

The Billabong Pro Java is sponsored by the Desa Resort located directly on the break at Cimaja, in addition to Vonzipper sunglasses, Nixon accessories, Kustom shoes, and the good people of Jawa Barat, and is part of the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.
