Kuta-Bali: Quiksilver together with the Government of West Java and the Coca-Cola ISC Tour is proud to announce the addition of the West Java Open as the 4th stop on the 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Tour schedule.
The 6-star professional surfing competition with total prize money of Rp 45,000,000 (USD 4,900) will take place from July 14-18 and will attract Indonesia’s top pro surfers to the scenic beachside town of Cimaja in search of great waves, prize money, and valuable championship points. The event will include Pro, Masters, and Women’s division competitions during the five-day contest period.
The famed cobblestone righthand point break of Cimaja in West Java will host the event, which is also the birthplace and hometown of 2008 Coca-Cola ISC Pro Champion Dede Suryana and 2009 Quiksilver King of the Grom’s Champion Sandi Slamet. Cimaja is located just a few hours drive from the cities of Jakarta and Bandung.
Last year the 2009 Billabong West Java Pro was won by 2009 Coca-Cola ISC Champion Lee Wilson from Bali, who will no doubt be on a mission to make it two Cimaja wins in two years. But he will have to best local ace Suryana, who will be looking to better his equal 3rd place finish from last year. Said Wilson after last year’s win, “I’m super stoked to have won this event. The people, the waves, and the hospitality in Cimaja have been so great. I’m really looking forward to getting back here next year”.
Suryana has just arrived back in Indonesia from his best World Qualifying Tour result so far, making it into the third round of the SriLankan Airlines Pro 2010 last week in Sri Lanka. He was extremely excited when he heard that the event was indeed returning to his home break, saying “I’m so happy that the government and tourism departments of West Java have initiated this event, as it is a great opportunity to bring attention to Cimaja and a great chance to help young local surfers further their careers. And extra special to me is that Quiksilver, Coca-Cola, and the other sponsors are involved so they can work together with the government to make and keep our beaches beautiful, now and in the future. And of course to keep holding surfing events here!”
Quiksilver SEA’s CEO Paul Hutson is also delighted again be part of a West Java surfing event after a hiatus of 4 years, having been the first to hold ISC events in Cimaja in 2004 and 2005, stating, “Quiksilver is pleased to support surfing and surf tourism in other parts of Indonesia, and West Java is a jewel in the treasure chest of amazing waves that exist throughout the beautiful archipelago of Indonesia. With Indonesia’s current King of the Groms champion Sandi Slamet and WQS globe trotting team rider Dede Suryana both hailing from Cimaja, it was a naturally good fit for Quiksilver to get on board with this event. We are looking forward to a long-term relationship with the West Java Government and supporting this event well into the future.”
The West Java Open is a part of the West Java government’s tourism promotion initiative for 2010, supported by Vice Governor of West Java Mr. Yusuf M. Effendi, the Head of West Java Tourism Mr. Ir. H. Herdiwan MM, and the mayor of Sukabumi Mr. H. Dadang Hendar. Mr. Diki Zulfikar from Cimaja will be the Contest Director.
