30 October 2009, Keramas-Bali:  The first day of the Quiksilver Open 2009 got underway today at Bali’s best East Coast surf venue of Keramas with the Roxy Open sounding off the starting horn at 7:30 am.

The 10 women got right into the perfect 3 foot glassy waves to battle it out in three 20 minute heats to decide the semifinalists, with competitors from Indonesia, Japan and Australia mixing it up.

15-year-old Rohaye from Padang in Sumatra showed great form on her backhand, winning the first heat of the morning and then going on to win Semifinal One as well.  “I’m glad for these good waves, because I like to surf on waves with some power.  It was a lot of fun, and to win both my heats and have a chance to win the final is a dream,” she exclaimed back on the beach.  Coming in second to Rohaye in the first heat and the semifinal was Gee Cormack from Australia.

The other standout of the morning was Mina Nagasima from Japan.  Though coming in second in her first heat, she dominated her Semifinal 2 heat with scores of 6.8 and 5.5 to get first over Bonne Gea from Nias, who posted the highest wave score of the day, a 7.2.

Mina’ showed some very aggressive surfing, with deep bottom turns and committed maneuvers off the top, and really enjoyed her morning session.  “I love this wave, it is so fun to surf.  And to come here and compete in such good waves is heaven,” she said with a big smile.

The Roxy Open Final will be held on the last day of competition in conjunction with the Men’s Open and Masters Final.  Rohaye, Gee Cormack, Mina Nagasima and Bonne Gea will be competing for the glory, trophy, and prize money that come due to the winner.

Tomorrow it will be the Men’s Open Division that will take to the water at 6:30 am, starting with the Trial Rounds and then straight into the Round 1 action.  The swell is expected to pick up and with a rising tide should create ideal conditions for the competitors.
