10 June 2011, Jakarta-Indonesia: The Hard Rock Café in Jakarta was the spot to be on Thursday night June 9 for the Best Party hosted by Quiksilver, as a pre-event kickoff party and media launch for the Best West Java 2011Surfing Competition presented by Quiksilver that will run from June 13 -18 at Cimaja Beach near Pelabuhan Ratu in West Java.
The evening started out with the arriving guests getting amongst it with their interpretation of the ‘BEST’ through photos and writing it on the ‘BEST’ wall. Guests were then also treated to the highlight video from last years West Java Open presented by Quiksilver surfing competition.
The official media launch kicked off proceedings where the press was given the opportunity to find out more about the up-coming event from Quiksilver’s Simon MacGregor, Indonesia’s top pro surfer and Quikilver team rider Dede Suryana, and Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championships and Asian Surfing Championship CEO Tipi Jabrik who is also a member of the Quiksilver surf team.
Suryana was last years surf competition winner and was asked how it felt to win the event in front of his family and friends at his hometown of Cimaja. “It was one of the best and most proud moments of my life so far,” said Suryana. “I had been out of the country for several months competing on the world tour of surfing, which is very difficult as there is so much traveling and so many good surfers, so it was a real mental boost for me. I’ll never forget that feeling, and I hope I can repeat my success again this year. I’m really grateful to Quiksilver and Coca-Cola for their support, and for joining up with the government to have this contest again.”
Suryana is in his second year of competing full time on the world tour of surfing , the only Indonesian currently committing to chasing the goal of being the first Indonesian surfer to qualify for the world championship “Dream Tour”. He was born and raised in Cimaja and was crowned Indonesia’s Surfing Champion in 2008.
The Best West Java Open 2011 presented by Quiksilver is a particularly special event this year as for the first time it is a dual-sanctioned competition where not only Indonesians surfers will be competing but also surfers from other part of Asia such as Taiwan, the Philippines, Singapore, and Malaysia. Coca-Cola ISC and ASC CEO Tipi Jabrik explained, “Indonesia is at the forefront of the development of surfing in Asia, having been involved in organized competition since as far back as the late 70’s. So with Quiksilver leading the way we are helping to develop surfing in other Asian countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Taiwan, and the Philippines. This event is a way we can invite surfers from other countries to come and share our waves and to show them our professional surfing organization.”
Quiksilver’s Simon MacGregor voiced his gratitude for the opportunity to join with the West Java government to sponsor this event, saying “It’s great to have the support of the local government, who see wealth and value in bringing surfing to their local constituency. As we seek to grow and nurture the sport of surfing in Indonesia as well as other parts of South East Asia, having political clout behind this gives added weight to the legitimacy of what surfing can provide to a local region, both economically and socially. Its very gratifying and we commend the West Java government for their foresight.”
Following these few serious moments it was straight back into the fun and entertainment starting with the 8 women candidates vying for the grand prize of Rp 3 million in the Roxy Short Short Competition. After two rounds of parading across the stage to impress the judging panel that consisted of Bruce Waterfield from Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia, Quiksilver SEA CEO Paul Hutson, Elsa Simanjuntak the Managing Editor for Fashion and Beauty at Cosmopolitan, and Baybay Niu, Roxy’s number one surfer from Taiwan. 20 year old Mickey was handed the winners check; “I never thought I would be the winner, so I’m so surprised!” she said. “Thanks Roxy, I am your biggest fan.”
In between rounds of the Roxy Short Short Competition there were fashion parades with professional models as well as Quiksilver and Roxy athletes Dede Suryana, Gemala Hanifah, and Deny-TX showing off the latest and greatest gear from Quiksilver, Roxy, and DC. Several lucky draws had members of the audience going home with goody bags full of t-shirts, boardshorts, caps and other products, as well as the winner’s of the Best Dressed awards who in addition to apparel product prizes received watches from Quiksilver and Roxy.
To round out a full night of entertainment and get the crowd up on their feet and dancing was Rolling Stones cover band Acid Speed, whose lead singer and lead guitarist put on quite a show mimicking the moves of Mick Jaggar and Keith Richards. Quiksilver CEO Paul Hutson even jumped up on the stage and sang along on a couple of tunes to the cheers of the crowd, looking very Eighties with his mullet hairstyle and long sideburns.
It was a memorable night and loads of fun, with lots of Jim Beam and Coca-Cola going down thirsty throats all evening but all good things have to end, so around 1 pm the crew put out the call to wrap it up and then everyone called it a night.
