1 April 2010, Canggu-Bali: The first day of the Oakley Pro 2010 at Canggu Beach in Bali got off to a textbook start with solid 3-4 foot sets smashing into the rivermouth reef break on a rising tide, giving the Coca-Cola ISC Tour’s pro surfers their first crack at showing off their best maneuvers in the first comp of the 2010 tour season.
Canggu is known the world over as one of the most high performance waves on the island of Bali, and when these lucky pro surfers get the beach all to themselves for a few days you’ll be in for a treat just watching them from the beach.
After three trial heats to decide who would fill the few remaining two spots in the 64 man heat draw, the first round action commenced at just before 9 am. All of Round 1 and 3 heats of Round 2 were run before the wind battered the tops of the waves to the point where the competition was stopped for the day.
Oakley’s Gino Andrias was very pleased with the day’s results, saying “The waves were cranking today, with perfect weather, and lots of great surfing by the boys. So with the forecast looking just about perfect, we expect to be competing over the next three days with a Sunday finish and getting Canggu at its best.” Any bets on who will win? “My money is on Lee Wilson,” said Andrias. “Not just because I’m with Oakley and I should say that, but because with these conditions, at this venue, and with his go for it attitude, he will be virtually impossible to beat!
And what does last year’s winner Mustofa Jeksen have to say about that? “I am so looking forward to surfing tomorrow,” he answered grinning. “These conditions are similar to last year and so perfect for me. I’m surfing good and feeling really strong, so I’m going into this comp very confident I can win. I really want to win it again too, so you can bet I’m going to make it really tough for anybody to beat me…that I promise you!” he added.
So tomorrow morning at 8 am the action will start up again with Heat 4 of Round 2, with the expectation that Round’s 2 and 3 will be completed before the wind kicks up. The swell looks to be dropping a bit, and with a rising tide should create even better conditions than those on offer today/
The Oakley Pro 2010 is the first event of the 2010 Coca-Cola ISC Tour season, and with Rp 10 million and valuable championship points on offer, a first place here at Canggu gets the season off to great start for the lucky winner.
The Oakley Pro 2010 is sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour and is sponsored/supported by Extreme Toys, New Era, San Miguel Light, OZ 101.2 FM, SurfTime, Lines, Magic Wave, and GUS.
