Kuta Beach-Bali:  The Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asia Final got underway today at Half Way on Kuta Beach under blue skies and in 1 meter waves, with just over 60 frothing groms from Bali, Java, Sumbawa, Australia, America, Brazil, and Japan vying for the coveted King of the Groms crown.

The competition started at 7:45 am and by noon had two rounds of qualifying completed, setting things up for round’s three and four tomorrow.  The swell is expected to increase tomorrow, so the competition will begin at 6:30 am on the rising tide.

In addition to the intense competitive action on tap for tomorrow, there will also be a fun  “push in” contest for micro grommets, giving even the youngest of groms a chance to catch some waves and show off with the assistance of their fathers or mothers, making it a fun event involving the whole family.

Two of the standout surfers of the day were Bomar from Lakey Peak Sumbawa and Dennis Nasution from West Java.  They both came a long way but from opposite directions in hopes of being crowned the South East Asian King of the Groms.  Both surfers were also recipients of the Coca-Cola Achievement Awards at previous competitions and so were awarded custom Jake Paterson Quiksilver surfboards for their outstanding surfing.

Quiksilver’s ex-pro surfer and Sport Marketing guru Jake Paterson himself was at the beach early this morning to check out the action and give some encouragement to the competing groms.  After the horn blew signaling the end of the final heat of the day he had this to say, “ I’m amazed by the progress these groms are showing from year to year.  Their level of surfing is really skyrocketing.  Its great to see how competitive the kids are, but how much fun they have at the same time. “

“That’s the great thing about these comps, especially here in Bali…everybody has heaps of fun but they really surf their guts out too.  I really look forward to these events….wish I was a grom again so I could be competing tomorrow,” he added laughing.

So get down to Halfway Kuta Beach tomorrow to see the hottest groms in Indonesia and South East Asia competing for the King of the Groms 2010 title, as well as enjoy a clean and beautiful Kuta Beach courtesy of the Quiksilver and Coca-Cola Amatil Indonesia beach cleaning crew.

Live heat results are available each day of the contest on Facebook at Indonesian Surfing Championship (Coca-Cola ISC Tour), so if you just can’t make it to Kuta Beach but have access to the Internet you can still keep up with how your favorite grom is progressing through the competition.

The Quiksilver King of the Groms South East Asia Final is presented by Coca-Cola Zero and sponsored-supported by Quiksilver SEA, Harris  Resort Kuta-Bali, Yamaha, Men’s Fitness, Trax, Spice, Cosmo Girl, CitaCinta, and Gadis.

The Quiksilver King of the Groms is a Grade 2 Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Junior Division Event.  The contestants in the Under 16 category will receive points towards their 2009 Coca-Cola ISC Junior Championship rankings.
