Great Conditions Have Top Seeds Scoring Big on Day 1 of Oakley Pro Junior at Canggu
1 August 2010
Other top scores came from IB Putu Simarai of Kuta (11.25 pts), Darmaputra Tonjo of Legian (11.25 pts) and Dewa Made Ardika of Kuta (9.9 pts), who were surfing brilliantly today in the great conditions on offer at Canggu Beach, one of the best contest venues on the West Coast of Bali.
25 pro juniors (surfers under age 21) from Bali, Nusa Lembongan, West Java, and Sumbawa arrived at Canggu Beach this morning at just after sunrise to compete in the Coca-Cola ISC sanctioned 2010 Oakley Pro Junior Grade 2 pro junior competition, the only stand-along pro junior event of the 2010 season.
The competition was hot and heavy this morning as the pro junior surfers battled it out in the 2-3 foot waves at Canggu Beach. The first heat got underway at 7:45 am under clearing skies and a steady offshore breeze starting out at the Sandbar as the tide was still low. After two heats had been completed Coca-Cola ISC Head Judge Wayan Pica made the call to shift over to the righthand rivermouth break, as consistent set waves were rolling through.
The action continued through Round 1 and into the man-on-man Round 2, completing four heats before the strong cross-shore winds had organizers call a halt for the day.
Tomorrow is expected to see the completion of the event, as the forecast is for similar conditions and possibly bigger wave height. Surfers have been told to stand by at 7 am for a 7:30 start. To see the heat draw and heat scores from today please go to www.isctour.com/events/projuniorcanggu.
At stake is Rp 30 million in prize money, with the winner receiving Rp 8 million, the runner up Rp 5 million, and the third place finishers each Rp 3 million. But even more important than the prize money are the valuable ISC Pro Junior Division points to be earned, which will be added to their current points and increase their ranking position.
The two top ranked pro junior surfers after this event who have the highest ISC Pro Junior Division points totals each receive a wild card into the up coming ASP sanctioned Oakley World Pro Junior Championships to be held at Keramas from October 2-13. The Oakley World Pro Junior boasts the richest prize purse in Pro Junior event history, with the winner coming home with a whopping US 20,000!
The 2010 Oakley Pro Junior is sponsored/supported by: Extreme Toys, life., New Era, Firewire, 101.2 Oz Radio Bali, Lines Magazine and Surftime Magazine, and is sanctioned by the Coca-Cola Indonesian Surfing Championship Tour.
